Languages of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast

The International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on February 21 to recognize and promote the linguistic and cultural diversity of indigenous, afrodescendant and ethnic groups from different parts of the world. This day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, in 1999.

Since 1987, article 11 of the Constitution of Nicaragua declares that “Spanish is the official language of the State. The languages of the communities of the Caribbean Coast shall also be officially used in the cases established by law”.

[vc_single_image image=”5811″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The autonomous regions of the Caribbean Coast are distinguished for being multilingual and home to various native and ethnic groups that speak on a day-to-day basis their own language.

Among the languages of the indigenous people is the Miskito, which is present especially in the North Caribbean; the Mayangna that is only spoken among the tribes of the same name, who lived in the North Caribbean, especially in the surroundings of the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve; next is the Ulwa, which language is mainly spoken in the community of Karawala, located south, and its surrounded; Rama is another indigenous language of the South Caribbean Coast.

As for the languages of the afrodescendant peoples, there is the Garifuna which is spoken in Pearl Lagoon, Orinoco, and other neighbor communities, and the Creole or Creole English, which is present in the entire Caribbean Coast, predominantly in municipalities like the Corn Islands, Bluefields, Pearl Lagoon, and Puerto Cabezas.
