San Cristobal Volcano

It is an active volcano and is the highest in Nicaragua at 1,783 meters, it is located in the municipality of Chinandega, department of Chinandega.

San Cristóbal is a volcanic complex of the occident region of Nicaragua. This volcano represents a challenge for those who demand themselves to do hiking. Climbing until reaching its top is the adventure that many tourists propose when they visit Chinandega.

 

Cosigüina Volcano

Inactive, in the west of the country, it has an elevation of 872 meters, it is the first volcano of the chain —from north to south— and is located in the municipality of El Viejo, Chinandega.

This volcano has in its interior a 1.5 km2 crater lagoon which can be seen when reaching the top, where the Gulf of Fonseca and the coasts of the republics of Honduras and El Salvador can also be seen.

In 1835, the Cosigüina volcano exploded with such force that it destroyed more than a third of its crater, its ashes reached Jamaica and Mexico City at some 1,400 kilometers away, it is considered the most violent eruption in the Americas

Volcán Cerro Negro

This incredible volcano with an elevation of 728 meters above sea level is located 25 kilometers from the colonial city of León and is another of the active volcanoes that Nicaragua has, it also holds the title of the youngest volcano in Central America, being its last eruption in 1999. The name of this volcano is due to the color of its sand, which is completely black. If you love adventure and to feel adrenaline, Cerro Negro offers Volcano Boarding. Getting to the crater will take you about an hour and sliding on a board and enjoying it to the fullest will be your reward when descending from the volcano.

Pilas-El Hoyo Volcanic Complex

These two volcanoes are located in the department of León. The Pilas volcano offers a panoramic view between the cones of the Sierra de Los Maribios, it is climbable on foot and you can walk between the old cones and craters to observe the hole of the El Hoyo volcano. Momotombo volcano

It is an active volcano with an elevation of 1,297 meters above sea level, located in the department of León and located on the shores of Lake Managua. This volcano is known for the eruption of 1610 that caused the destruction of the Spanish town founded by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba and whose ruins are known as León Viejo, its inhabitants then decided to move the settlement, originating the current city of León. Given its characteristics, it is possible to climb it but it is one of the most difficult in Nicaragua, due to its height it is almost impossible to make a trip in a single day, it is recommended to camp and descend the next day.

Telica volcano

This active volcano is located in the department of León and has a height of 1,060 meters above sea level. It is possible to go to the top of the volcano where it takes 7-12 hours, it is recommended to do camping at the top to appreciate the lava of the volcano that can only be seen at night. Masaya volcano
