Visit Ometepe Island
The largest volcanic lake island on the planet, Ometepe was named a UNESCO Biosphere Preserve in 2011. Formed by two towering volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, the tropical forested island encompasses more than 276 square kilometers and is home to nearly 40,000 residents who live an agrarian life, harvesting plantains, rice, tobacco, sugar cane and coffee, some catering to the growing influx of tourists. A visit to Ometepe has been described as a sensory experience filled with the sounds of wildlife and views of nature permeated by a mystical presence.
